Marian Call is a singer/songwriter from Juneau, Alaska. She was our Special Guest performer (accompanied by Seth Boyer,) at Astronomy Cast's Eclipse Escape Weekend in St. Louis last August, where she completely engaged the crowd and debuted Good Night Moon, a song she wrote specifically for, and debuted at, the event. You can view their debut performance here:
Some of y'all had great questions in the chat, here are answers! 1) I was totally a science nerd in high school, especially physics and advanced organic chem. 2) I studied music formally my whole life (my parents were music teachers, so I've had music theory training since birth). My degree is in music composition from Stanford University. 3) I compose in my head actually! I know enough music theory to conceptualize the chords and harmonies I want without hearing them in real time. I sometimes write scores and arrangements when I invite string ensembles or soloists to join me, but otherwise I just write ridiculously complex chord charts to make my guitarists' lives difficult. And finally, here's a link to the Good Morning Moon video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab2_7WQzulA And the David Bowie/Randall Munroe cover that got me and my friends some notoriety: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygrdAvmr-MA
I want to call my planet Dirty McCrakkin :)
She is talented and must grow to expand science to the masses
If planet 9 could be out there maybe Nibiru is too!
"are there still albums?" there will always be music, always be musicians, and always be albums. Broke my heart a lil to hear that question Fraser. Music predates language. all or almost all matter I figure is energy, and that makes our universe. Music is sound, air moving at certain cycles, you cant touch, taste or smell it. But much like the universe it expands all around you, in every direction (maybe dark matter/energy is music?!!?). Light may be how we see the universe, but music is how it sings to us and through us. We are stardust,.. Nous Sommes Du Soleil. and rightly so, the vinyl record has come back to claim its throne on earth carry on....
There needs to be a shift in the objectives of both NASA and ESA by concentrating on space science sending space missions into our solar system. They should then make use of the space launch companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin to who can do it much cheaper than ULA or SLS. By doing this they would release a lot more money to do science and explore more places in the solar system.
Love the music video, very cute, but the random talking between Fraser & Marian in the background during the video is not understandable, resulting in audio mush while they're talking. Hope it doesn't go out that way on the podcast...
Thanks, Marian, for stopping by the WSH today! The video for "Good Morning Moon" was excellent! Great to hear about your creative process--hope you walked away with even more ideas added to your voluminous curiosity (Tomes of Thoughts?). Can't wait to catch up on your music! BTW: Pooh Bear, FTW! Long Days and Pleasant Nights to all at the WSH Crew--keep gettin' Spacy with it!
Cassowaries in my front yard--they're friendly, although large.

Marian Call! Very talented Singer/songwriter! Nice! I like what she does, creating her own genre, how clever, as it transports science to us. You make a very valid proposal with the idea of standardization of parts for space-missions!
